Cretaceous epoch, about 75 million to 71 million years ago. Two species are currently
recognized, although others have been assigned in the past. The type species is V.
mongoliensis, named and described in 1924.
Dinosaurs were a diverse group of reptiles that roamed the Earth from about 230 million years ago to 65
million years ago, during the Mesozoic Era. They were one of the most successful groups of animals to have
ever existed, dominating terrestrial ecosystems for over 160 million years. Dinosaurs came in various shapes
and sizes, from the massive long-necked sauropods like Brachiosaurus to the fearsome carnivores like
Tyrannosaurus rex.
